Alpha Kappa Omega
Alpha Kappa Alpha
Scrapbook Mentoring Project

Over 1.5 million children have at least one parent in prison. For many of these young people, the emotional trauma of having a parent in prison results in a host of difficulties. Many children of incarcerated parents have trouble forming healthy relationships and may engage in a variety of self-destructive behaviors. The Alpha Kappa Omega Chapter and Alpha Kappa Alpha’s spent the afternoon at Change Happens! to mentor and assist with making Scrapbooks for Father’s Day because they realize that children of incarcerated parents need stable and reliable care from adults. The children were very excited and anxious to mail their “dads” the finished product.

Reception Honoring Sharon Owens – CenterPoint Energy

Change Happens! had the pleasure of celebrating with Sharon Owens as she was honored at her Retirement Reception.   CenterPoint Energy and its employees have been critical to the long-term success of Change Happens! by providing substantial financial support and donating thousands of volunteer hours to our programs over the years. We would like to take this opportunity to welcome Diane Hasell to the Change Happens! family.

Happy Father’s Day

A Word From Rev. Leslie Smith

Rev. SmithFatherhood is one of the greatest joys that a man can experience and as Father’s Day approaches each year I make a special effort to reflect upon the relationship I have with my children. I have been blessed with five beautiful children who each possess different personalities and qualities making them uniquely special. As some of you know, I travel to Haiti several times per year for mission work. Through God’s blessing, I have also become “father” to three Haitian teenagers and although they are not my biological children, I love and care for them as if they were my own. I understand the role of a father stretches far beyond genetic lineage. Father’s come in all different packages and can be single parents raising a child alone, divorced parents only seeing the child every other weekend and there are also the father’s that are incarcerated only seeing the child occasionally. As men our mantle is great and the great expectation to uphold the family, finances, and build futures is ours to bear. I encourage you in this season of celebration to keep the faith, stand strong, uphold your families, and most importantly lead by example. Always remember, your relationships with others do matter because they impact more than just your life; others are inspired. Regardless of your current situation, I would like to say Happy Father’s Day to all of the men that embrace the gift of being a father.

Change Happens! Is Awarded Grant From

Houston Young Lawyers Foundation (HYLF)

Unfortunately in our society, youth often think of the law as something that is imposed on them and law enforcement as the opposition rather than seeing them as entities that allow society to function and make their lives more secure. At Change Happens! we have developed the “Law & Order Summer Workshop Series” which gives youth an in-depth look at local, state, and federal agencies responsible for law enforcement and our legal system. Thanks to the generous contribution from Houston Young Lawyers Foundation we are able to Make Change Happen in the lives of at-risk youth participating in the program.

BMC Software Spends The Day At Change Happens! For Team Building Exercise

Bennie Ferrell Catering hosted a Team building exercise with BMC Software Professionals at Change Happens! This group of individuals worked together in teams to prepare food and a party for the Change Happens! after-school program. Team building activities are used to foster awareness of the team spirit and to reinforce commitment to the team’s shared goals and objectives. Change Happens! was excited to be a part of this  great team building experience.
