“Empowering Families To Help Themselves”

A Word From Rev. Leslie Smith II

The new year always brings new goals and resolutions.  If your New Year’s resolutions from last year has gone unresolved just know that you are not alone. The new year is just that, NEW!  While you can start something new any day of the year, January 1st is always an opportunity to start a new set of goals and achieve them.  This is the time to sit down and think back on the past year and think about what your goals are moving forward.  Starting now look ahead to the future.  It’s not necessarily about wiping the slate clean; but rather evaluating where you are and where you want to be.  Take your experiences with you and set a goal or resolution to work towards. But don’t just make it a goal for 2013, make it a goal that will become a part of you forever.  Incorporate your goals into your daily life and soon it will become second nature.  Think of your goals and resolutions in terms of lifestyle changes; positive things you want to do for the rest of your life.  Let it be something that will become a part of who you are. Most importantly get excited for the opportunity that the new year brings – to make positive changes and improve your life!!

Change Happens!
HIV Program

Change Happens! HIV program is designed to empower individuals with the knowledge and skills necessary to develop healthier lifestyles. The intent is to reach low income communities, intravenous drug users, and sex workers. Whats different about our program is that it’s focused on the neighborhood as a unit of intervention because anyone who has had unprotected sex or used intravenous drugs could be at risk of contracting HIV (the virus that causes AIDS). Instead of focusing strictly on individual risky behaviors we’re trying to encourage the entire community to get tested. A team of outreach workers go throughout the community and encourage residents to get tested via its mobile testing unit. It only takes approximately 20 minutes to receive preliminary results to find out if a patient is HIV positive or not. Going regularly into communities Change Happens! has found that young people in particular have begun to seek out the outreach team for testing and information. The units also offer counseling and condoms . We have young people who come up to the mobile unit asking questions that they don’t feel comfortable asking their parents. One of the health educators stated; “It is extremely rewarding to think that I can help these young people prevent contracting the virus. I am also helping to prevent teen pregnancy”.

January is National Mentoring Month

The overall goal of the program is to match youth in confinement with a caring adult mentor that will help facilitate their successful reintegration into the community, thereby reducing recidivism, enhancing safety and community capacity.
