YOUNG FATHERS CAN

Young Fathers CAN provides comprehensive reentry support services that address the successful and safe transition of young fathers from detention, out-of-home placement, or incarceration to their families and communities. Young Fathers C.A.N. (Create A New Beginning) targets 75 criminal justice-involved fathers, 17-24 years of age, residing in any Harris County detention facility. All services are free of cost and are focused on mentoring fathers, assisting families and empowering people. The purpose of the Young Fathers CAN program is to implement high-quality mentoring to reduce recidivism for young fathers, improve parenting skills, resource knowledge and utilization, community engagement and connection, and quality of life for families in the greater Houston community. Performance measures will be used to inform the Office of Department of Justice of successes and challenges in order to establish best practices.

  • Each young father is paired with a male mentor

    • Mentors act as a support system

    • Mentor and mentees meet a minimum of 4 hours a month

  • Mentees will take parenting classes, participate in training and receive employment/education assistance

  • Attend job readiness training 

  • Financial literacy and other supportive services
