SUSTAIN LEARN

PROJECT

Leading with Education, Advocacy & Resistance with our Neighbors

The SUSTAIN Wellbeing COMPASS (COMmitment to Partnership in Addressing HIV/AIDS in Southern States Initiative)  Coordinating Center of the University of Houston Graduate College of Social Work is a shared learning partner with Change Happens. Leading with Education, Advocacy & Resistance with our Neighbors (LEARN) and Change Happens as a cohort of LEARN is centered on program expansion of Trauma-Informed Care (TIC) Practices. The project takes a review of the current knowledge of TIC among the staff at Change Happens. The program assess areas where TIC approaches are currently practiced, and steps to replicate the current practices in all programming within Change Happens. In conjunction with Ribbon Consulting is helping staff unpack their past learns on trauma and to identify opportunities to increase Change Happens ability to become a more intentional TIC workplace and center of care.

In addition to the TIC, we have collaborated with the COMPASS Initiative to bring the Showing up for Black Power, Liberation, and Healing: Supporting our Partners Project. The Social Work Advocacy Training (S.W.A.T.) Liberation Project goal is to help liberate the Third Ward community in Houston, Texas, from systemic racism through individual and collective actions of solidarity and equity. The Liberation Project has a two-phase approach, including a Public Service Announcement (PSA) and Mobilizing the Community. The aims of the project include:

  1. Increased knowledge about systemic racism and its impact on people of color,

  2. Encourage the community to engage in racial justice through individual and collective actions of liberation

  3. Build solidarity among Third Ward partner organizations toward a unified goal of fighting systemic racism.
